Su Song (1019-1101) finished the world¡¯s first astronomical clock (Ë®ÔËÒÇÏǫ́) on Jan. 16, 1989, 600 years before the Europeans.

Some experts claim his book on the clock was the world¡¯s mechanical design, manual,with 60 illustrations and diagrams of the 150 separate parts.

The tower¡¯s upper layer was for astronomical observations, the central section demonstrated celestial phenomena, and the lower area was a chronograph with moving puppets to show time.

The water-powered wooden clock tower was a bit large for the average apartment¡ªabout 10 to 12 meters high and 7 meters wide. I suspect Chi-nese now have them down to wristwatch-size (it would explain why my students are often astronomically late to class).

S¨± S¨°ng was also an adept herbalist. In 1061 he compiled the ¡°Illustrated Canon of Materia Medica¡± (Bencao Tujing±¾²Ýͼ¾­)¡ªthe definitive guide for those who think the grass is always greener on the other side. He explained, for example, when and where to find ¡®dragon¡¯s blood¡¯ (dracaena family), which modern Chinese claim lives for 8,000 years.

¡°Dragon¡¯s blood is from plants. The fine looking trees are dozens of feet tall. The red resin (from which it derives the name ¡®Dragon¡¯s Blood¡¯) oozes from the trees like glue and congeals. Harvest time varies.¡±

S¨± S¨°ng¡¯s Home (L¨²sh¨¡n T¨¢ng J¨«ngq¨± (S¨±S¨°ng G¨´j¨± «ɽÌþ°Çø,ËÕË̹ʾÓ) S¨±s¨°ng ËÕËÌThe Ancestral Hall for Fujian's Su Clan, is in the north-western corner of T¨®ng¡¯¨¡n. It was first built in 994 A.D. by Su Guanghai, and S¨±S¨°ng was later born here.

T¨®ng¡¯¨¡n Museum (T¨®ng¡¯¨¡n B¨®w¨²gu¨£n ͬ°²²©Îï¹Ý) Opened in early 1990 inside the T¨®ng¡¯¨¡n Confucian Temple (see Religion Chapter), this mu-seum has 3 main areas: T¨®ng¡¯¨¡n historical relics, T¨®ng¡¯¨¡n historical person-ages, and archives. The museum has at least a couple thousand items in the exhibits.
