If you're staying in Xiamen awhile, I recommend you try to pick up a little Mandarin. Xiamen University's Overseas Education College offers full and part-time courses - or hire a tutor (though the tutor route takes lots of discipline, and the tutor may be more interested in learning English than teaching Chinese).
